Did you ever notice that the class schedule says “Choi” and “Kim” for some classes? They indicate in which room the class will take place. The big do jang is called “Kim” after Grandmaster Kim, who was the instructor for Masters Meany, Marr and Giletti, and who is the founder of Taekwon-do International. The other practice area is called “Choi” after General Choi Hong Hi (1918-2002), the founder of Taekwon-do, a general of the Korean Army, and the man who developed the theories of movement we practice and devised the patterns we study. Grandmaster Kim was a student of General Choi, serving on the Korean Demonstration Team and performing around the world under the direction of General Choi. So in a way Grandmaster Kim is the “grandfather” and General Choi is the “great grandfather” of the students at Glen Ridge Taekwon-do.
If you would like more information Grandmaster Kim wrote the “History of Taekwon-do” on the GlenridgeTkd.com website. Now when you go in the do jang and see the paintings of Grandmaster Kim and General Choi you know who they are!
